Resident fights to save Oxhey historic barn

An Oxhey resident is hoping to save a historic barn from the clutches of a foreign company by submitting her own planning application for the land.

Christine McNulty, of Hampermill Lane, has submitted an application to preserve Oxhey Hall Barns as a film and photographic location – even though she does not own it.

She is hoping to save the Grade II listed barn from being turned into residential housing, as French water company Viola look to cash-in on their land.

In February last year a public inquiry was held into plans to convert the beautiful barns into two one-bedroom and two two-bedroom homes.
However, at the end of the two-day inquiry the planning inspector upheld Three Rivers District Council’s decision to refuse Viola, which also owns Three Valleys Water, permission to build on the land.

Now, with another planning application from the water company looming, Christine has submitted her own application to change the use of the barn in the hope of saving it.

Three Rivers District Council has confirmed that under the Town and Country Planning Acts it is possible for anyone to apply for planning permission either to build on the land or to change the use of the land.

As long as they serve the correct notice on the landowner prior to making the planning application the council is obliged to consider the planning application.
